May 20, 2014: Dr. Lori Walters on Chronoleap
Dr. Lori Walters is an assistant professor of history at the University of Central Florida and a researcher with the UCF Institute of Simulation and Training (IST), dedicated to virtual heritage using emerging technologies. Her project, Chronoleap, received funding from the National Endowments for the Arts and the National Science Foundation. Chronoleap seeks to represent how the 1964-65 World’s Fair promoted better living at the dawn of the space age with its portrayals of displays, gadgets, innovations and possibilities. Research insights and lessons learned will be shared surrounding the development and testing of Chronleap. Application of informal STEM education for different age groups will be discussed. The project includes a game and can be downloaded here: http://srealserver.eecs.ucf.edu/chronoleap

March 18, 2014: Dr. Barbara Truman on Transdisciplinarity
March 18, 2014: Dr. Barbara Truman, aka D’lightful Doowangle, Simulation Strategist, Fusion Unlimited Networks Research and former faculty administrator at the University of Central Florida. Dialogue, a Discipline Towards Transdisciplinarity in Collaborative Virtual Environments?
Description: How is it that some individuals and groups who often do not know each other face to face and are widely distributed are so effective at collaborating in virtual environments (CVEs)? When it comes to collaboration, is it preferable to specialize in a field or have a broad range of knowledge outside one’s field? Transdisciplinarity is considered a skill necessary for thriving in a future where adaptability to changing technology and interacting with diverse others is required to solve and prevent wicked problems. Can embodiment of our avatars help us practice a discipline of dialogue? This session will discuss these questions and share results from a doctoral study performed in fall 2013. Check out the modified survey questions to learn how data was collected and to reflect on your thoughts

December 17, 2013: Niela Miller: Symbolic Modeling
Niela Miller, M.S. Education.Communications (Marly Milena in SL) is an educator, Gestalt therapist, and multi-artist. She uses the technology of SL virtuality to enable individuals and those who work with them to create symbolic models of ideas, feeling states, values et al. This enables a shift in perspective, new insights and learning processes which go beyond what can be accomplished with thinking or talking alone. She will do a demo and will also engage a few attendees in interactions. She is eager to hear ideas for applications from the audience.and will leave some time at the end for that purpose.

September 17, 2013: Stephen Gasior, Ph.D., Founder of Virtual Islands for Better Education (VIBE)
Stephen Gasior, Ph.D. (Stephen Xootfly virtual worlds) is a biology instructor at Ball State University. While at the University of New Orleans, Stephen taught 3 semesters of nonmajors biology in Second Life from the summer of 2010 to spring 2012.Wanting to deliver more than a lecture class, he took students on Darwin's Voyage of Beagle, made them breed bunnies, visited Mendel's Abby, and present and sometimes BE an animal. He also developed virtual chemistry and chromosome segregation manipulatives for the class. His latest creation in partnership with Wizardy and Steamworks is a Population Genetics and Selection simulator. Stephen will discuss making a class into more of an experience for college students to learn difficult science topics. In addition, Stephen is the founder and Consoler in Chief of an OpenSimulator building collaborative, Virtual Islands for Better Education. The value, difficulties, and insights into using OpenSim instead of or in addition to Second Life for virtual education will also be presented.
