The "digital revolution" has led to marked cultural changes, including new opportunities for and challenges to traditional religious communities. Digital gaming can function as an "authentic fake," a practice that does the authentic work of a religions in a secular context. Games offer opportunities to build communities, consider questions of ethical import, develop a sense of personal meaning, and even experience transcendence. The landscape of religious belief and practice is now rich with new opportunities. An increasing number of people are adopting virtual worlds/video games. September 16, 2014: Jeroen Frans on Helping Kids Make Cool Cretaceous Sea Creatures in Second Life
During the summer, the American Museum of Natural History in New York City hosted a summer camp for teens where they learned to scientifically model Cretaceous sea creatures. The Vesuvius Group created a tool in Second Life to help the kids easily create models of the creatures they are studying, and release them in an underwater environment. We will discuss the project, talk about the tool & environment , what we learned, and the hurdles we had to overcome. Finally, you’ll get the opportunity to try the creation tool yourself.
