We met on Avacon Grid to share the videos we created with the Clip Set provided in October. There was discussion regarding the value of teaching of content creation. It may be worth watching Sir Ken Robinson to help validate this thinking. More food for thought is the concept that according to the 1% Internet Rule ONLY 1% of the users of a website actively create new content, while the other 99% of the participants only lurk. more. So...let's create more rather than just lurk and let's help our students to be creators rather than lurkers.
It was fun to see the different interpretations for the same visual content. Different audio , different sequencing and different story. So how does this relate to teaching and learning? How could this work in our classrooms?

- Create a clip set of video or still that are related in some way to a book students are reading and have them prepare a "movie Trailer" for the book. Kind of a new way to do a book report - This activity was actually carried through by one of our machinima participants, in an elementary school using imovie on an ipad and pairing students.
- Use a random clipset like we did or use the exact same set, install on computers prior to students arrival so you don't have to deal with firewalls on youtube. Have students work in pairs or groups and allow them to create. Students will see that there are many answers NOT just one. When creating there is not one correct answer.
- When addiing audio is problematic (too noisy in classroom to record a dialogue) use subtitles as one of our participants did in this clip; watch The Search created from our clipset#1.
- If a creator is working alone, audio editing software can be used to modify a voice and sound like multiple people are talking as in this interpretation o our Clipset#1; The Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything.
- An Introduction to your class that you could use for an online or a a real life class to give the big picture. It could also be used for parent night to provide the big picture or on a website to inform or market your class, (marketing an elective is sometimes necessary).
- A very short clip that indicates congratulations that can be used in a game, a meme to be played when students "do something well", used in an online class to give positive response.
OCtober Activity - October 2017
Let’s tackle the time and complexity of machinima. It’s not difficult – but complex and if we scaffold activities or create a type of "toolbox" for educators we could develop a playbook of lessons that we can use with our respective students.
So this month:
Create your own Youtube channel (if you don’t already have one) Provide us with the URL so that we can subscribe
Subscribe to EduMachinima Youtube Channel – we will be using it for the year.
Download clips to use from Clipset#1 (They are all from WoW so be sure to credit Blizzard)
