Who We AreThe International Society for Technology in Education's Virtual Environments Network seeks to explore all things related to education in Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Environments. This ISTE PLN (Professional Learning Network) sponsors regular events as well as special events that come up during the year. We also serve ISTE at its annual Conference and Expo by planning and presenting an onsite "playground" as well as a #notatiste offering in virtual online venues.

Our HistoryVEN is a re-imagining of what began as a "Second Life Playground" in Atlanta, GA's NECC conference in Atlanta, Ga in 2007. It ramped up the next year in Washington D.C, and in 2009 the Special Interest Group (SIG) for Virtual Environments was born. SIGVE was to become the Virtual Environments Network when the SIG concept was replaced with the PLN concept by ISTE. The work continues to this day as our vision broadens to consider the educational value of all things of enhanced reality--VR, AR, DR, MR, all falling under the new heading of XR, Extended Reality. See this article at the Virtual Education Journal for that early story.
